The BitWise Scottish Cup : Sunday 22 January

Cairneyhill Subbuteo Club played host to the BitWise Scottish Cup at the Maltings Hotel in Cairneyhill. This was a fine venue with the hotel bar very close at hand (see picture above). One quibble was the quality of the lighting, particularly on two of the eight tables. The club had produced an excellent event programme although 'subbuteo' had been incorrectly spelt!! The tournament was won by Mike Burns whoe defeated Gareth Christie 1 - 0 in the final. Glasgow did have representation in the final - Tom Burns was the referee!
All five Glasgow players qualified out of the groups but only Ronnie McKenzie reached the quarter-finals, defeating fellow club member Colin Berry 5-4! Tom Burns lost 3-2 to Gareth Christie, Zoltan Hegedus lost 3-0 to Dave Allen and Dave Gladman lost 4-0 to Mike Burns. Ronnie was drawn against Mike Burns in the quarters but lost 3-0. The players had performed well in the groups but bad luck in the ensuing draw resulted in only one player progressing further.
Congratulations to Scotland's newest club in organising their first national tournament! Although only one of their players, George Higgins, reached the last 16, this will have been a valuable learning experience for them. They have an excellent set-up with lots of potential. There is no doubt that they will continue to progress.

Scottish International Grand Prix
This took place at the Holiday Inn, Glasgow Airport on the weekend of 26th and 27th April.

There were some controversial incidents two of which we captured on video.
Steve Bennet lost a penalty shoot out against Jim Law. But was Ian Bell correct to call for a re-take when he judged Steve to have moved his keeper before Jim took his shot? We have the answer:
In the Grand Prix final Kasper Bennett lost to Chris Short. Chris scored on the half-time whistle or was it after the whistle?
